Chapter 23

I closed my teen behavior textbook and rubbed my eyes. I’d spent a couple hours of reviewing notes and text so I’d be ready for a test tomorrow. I pushed back from the desk and gave a good stretch.

My gaze travelled to the bulletin board above the desk. As I often did, I read through the anniversary messages I’d tacked up there. Alex thought it was crazy that I put them up, but I liked to look at them, re-read them. It was like getting a hug from Alex when he wasn’t around.

“It was two years ago today.”

“Sticky cheese helped me tell you I had a crush.”

“I tried to talk you out of that pizza but I’m glad I failed.”

“It’s been an amazing ride so far.”

“From this…” and the picture I gave for our first Christmas.

“…to this…” with the Falcons championship picture.

“…to this…” and our stunning senior formal pic.

“…to this…” showing a snapshot of us playing at Comerica Park in the GLI last year.

“…to this…” and a selfie we took during last summer’s camping trip.

“…to starting our second year at Michigan.”

“It hasn’t all been awesome.”

“But I’ve loved sharing it all with you.”

“Soon these two years will multiply to become four, then eight, sixteen and into forever.”

“I look forward to spending all of it with you.”

“Join me at seven tonight at IHOP, in honor of our first date, to celebrate.”

I sat there, goofy grin on my face, enjoying the flashbacks playing in my head.

The flashbacks halted when I nearly jumped out of my chair because of a slammed door. I’d heard a lot of noises on the floor, but never a door slam that loud. I got up and poked my head out the door in time to see Tyler bolting for the stairs. Chuck, Danny’s roommate, looked out from their room across the hall.

“Loud, right?” I said as I shrugged at Chuck.

“Tyler!” Erik yelled, coming out of his room and sprinting for the stairs. Chuck and I watched as Erik stopped at the top of the stairs.

“What was up with him?” Chuck asked.

“No idea,” Erik said as he walked back towards us. “We were talking about Thanksgiving plans and he started yelling about family commitments and stormed out. Whatever. I’ll let him cool off and talk to him tomorrow. Sorry about that.”

“No worries,” I said. “Just scared the crap out of me.” I grinned, trying to let him know I didn’t really care. “Later, Chuck.” I nodded at him as I closed the door.

Back at the desk, I pulled the laptop to the center of the desk and woke it up so I could take care of a couple emails. I saw two new ones at the top of the inbox. The first was from the campus hotline and the second was a response from Alex. I opened his. A woman wanted an escort from the rec center and he picked it up since he was getting off work there. Since a female grad student, one who identified as lesbian, was attacked last weekend, the hotline was getting even more callers.
